Cairns COVID works funding to support 70 jobs

Fogarty Park in Cairns will soon have all-weather options for markets and other events after the council secured funding for a new turf surface and upgraded drainage It’s one of 11 projects in the region to share $7.42 million in funding through the State Government’s $200 million COVID Works for Queensland program. Cairns Regional Council estimates the works will create or support around 70 local jobs. Member for Cairns Michael Healy said the projects would make a difference to the region. “I am very pleased that projects like the re-turfing at Fogarty Park, as well as new footpaths in various locations around Cairns and upgrading important water and wastewater infrastructure will be funded through COVID Works for Queensland,” Mr Healy said. “While there’s no doubt people in Cairns are resilient, I know these projects, and the jobs they create, will be extremely welcome during this tough time.” Other Cairns region projects funded through COVID Works for Queensland include upgrading Babinda Pool and a new toilet near the boat ramp at Harbour Drive, Trinity Park. Across the Far North a new pound facility in Mareeba, the installation of smart water meters across Douglas Shire and a new airport terminal in Aurukun are among the projects funded. In announcing the projects, Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the positive impacts would be felt almost immediately. “Across the State, every council area is benefitting from the COVID Works for Queensland program. “In total, 520 projects are being funded, which the councils tell us will support or create more than 4,600 jobs," he said. “It’s a fantastic outcome and will go a long way to help Queensland unite and recover. Projects for Far North communities include: $7,420,000 for the Cairns Regional Council – including to enhance the turf at Fogarty Park and a new amenities block at the Trinity Park boat ramp$1,020,000 for the Croydon Shire Council – including for upgrades at the Water Treatment Plant, rodeo grounds, bowling green and tennis court$1,050,000.00 for the Etheridge Shire Council – including for a new Community Health Building and upgrades at the Forsayth Sports and Recreation Ground$2,380,000 for the Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council – including for improving community accessibility to the Council Administration Building and upgrades at Malcolm Park$1,910,000 for the Aurukun Shire Council for a new terminal at Aurukun Airport$1,460,000 for the Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council – replacing the roof and electrical upgrades at the Community Canteen and continuing refurbishment at the Arts and Culture Centre$1,170,000 for the Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council – including for the development of the Cultural Precinct and upgrades to the Football Field$1,070,000 for the Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council – including for the construction of a new building for office and retail$1,240,000 for the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council – installing footpaths and lighting, upgrades at playgrounds and the refurbishing the Child and Youth Services facility$1,390,000 Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council – upgrades at the Community Hall, cemetery and sports field$1,630,000 for the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council – upgrades to water infrastructure and the Bamaga Swimming Pool and improving street lighting$1,440,000 Torres Shire Council – the redevelopment of the Tamwoy Basketball Court and upgrades to playgrounds at Rosehill, Bach Beach, Bayo Beach and ANZAC Park$1,990,000 for the Cook Shire Council – including for heating the Cooktown Pool, installing a new shade structure at Lions Park playground and continuing the Cooktown Shire Hall refurbishment$1,240,000 for the Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council – including for renovating the Hope Vale Aged Care Facility and upgrading the entrance to the Hope Vale Indigenous Knowledge Centre$1,070,000 for the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council – including for the construction of a new splash park and upgrades to the Community Hall$2,370,000 for the Cassowary Coast Regional Council – including for the installation of a viewing platform of the Johnston River, upgrades to caravan parks and improving the Innisfail public safety CCTV system$1,430,000 for the Douglas Shire Council – including for the installation smart water meters across Douglas Shire and upgrades at the Port Douglas Wastewater Treatment Plant$2,520,000 for the Mareeba Shire Council – including for a new pound facility, the installation of solar panel and lights at various locations, and the installation of air conditioning in the Community Hall$1,440,000 for the Torres Strait Island Regional Council – including for a new mobile desalination plant as well as water and wastewater infrastructure upgrades at various locations $2,120,000.00 for the Tablelands Regional Council – including for upgrades to water mains in Ravenshoe, replacing the Atherton Pool cover and upgrades to three playgrounds in Atherton, Walkamin and Millaa Millaa.
